A PHOENICIA HOTEL INITIATIVE THAT COMBINES FLAVOR WITH SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
A Phoenicia Hotel initiative that combines flavor with social responsibility
October 14, 2016, Beirut – Supporting locally grown fresh produce has long been integral to the Phoenicia Hotel Beirut’s sourcing policy, but the recent challenging times faced by Lebanese farmers has prompted a novel approach. Bowls of fresh, juicy apples were seen across the hotel in locations that include the lobby, entrance to Mosaic, Amethyste lounge and Cascades, with an invitation for guests and visitors to help themselves. The hotel’s extra consignments of apples are a concerted effort to play a role in alleviating the country’s stockpiling apple crops, and directly help the farmers whose livelihoods are suffering from an imposed export ban. To raise awareness of the need to appreciate Lebanon’s agricultural sector, buffet dishes featuring locally sourced ingredients are now explicitly labeled “Made with local produce” in the hotel’s Mosaic restaurant.
In a bid to further raise awareness and engage others in social responsibility, the Phoenicia Hotel is currently preparing a series of tutorials of apple based recipes to be shared on social media and in the hotel’s e-newsletter. The sight and taste of Lebanese apples has certainly proved to be a big hit with guests, eliciting comments that include “Great initiative”, “Everything local tastes better”, and that the Phoenicia’s landmark status is “well deserved”.
